The Sagunt a Escena festival presents its 43rd edition with 19 productions — 11 at the Roman Theatre and 8 at public venues — organised by the Institut Valencià de Cultura with Sagunto City Council and the Valencia Provincial Council.

The Sagunt a Escena summer festival marks its 43rd edition with a programme centred on classical texts and high-profile performers. The Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC — Valencian Cultural Institute), the Conselleria de Educació, Cultura i Universitats, Sagunto City Council and the Valencia Provincial Council have together announced 19 productions: 11 at the Roman Theatre and 8 in public spaces across the city. Fourteen of the performing companies are Valencian.

The Roman Theatre will receive €165,000 in improvement works, adding roughly 200 seats to its current capacity. The venue, built around 50 AD, was declared Spain's first National Monument in 1896 and once held up to 8,000 spectators. Its 1990-1994 restoration by architects Giorgio Grassi and Manuel Portaceli became one of Spain's most debated conservation cases after the Supreme Court ruled it illegal.

The programme is complemented by OFF-ROMÀ, a free series of street theatre, circus and music performances in urban spaces aimed at families. The festival is the flagship summer performing-arts event in the Valencian Community. Reporting: elperiodic.com.
