Sagunto breaks ground on €50 M wastewater plant to serve industrial and urban growth
The Valencian Government and the EU are co-funding a new wastewater treatment plant at Parc Sagunt II, designed to process 30,000 m³ per day and supply reclaimed water to local farms and incoming industries, including PowerCo's battery gigafactory.
Construction of the new EDAR (wastewater treatment plant) at Parc Sagunt II is progressing under a €49.65 million contract awarded to the UTE Ferrovial-Ocide-Cadagua consortium, with a 25-month completion schedule. The project is co-funded by EPSAR (Valencian public sanitation body) and the EU FEDER Comunitat Valenciana 2021-2027 programme, and will serve Sagunto, Estivella, Albalat dels Tarongers, Gilet and Petrés.
Unlike conventional treatment plants, the facility will include a tertiary stage — involving coagulation-flocculation, sand filtration and disinfection — that produces reclaimed water suitable for agricultural irrigation and industrial use. At 30,000 cubic metres per day, it is sized to match the comarca's projected population and economic growth, including factories such as PowerCo.
Improved effluent quality will also benefit the River Palancia and the Marjal dels Moros wetlands — a 300-hectare Special Protection Area (SPA) under the EU Natura 2000 network that shelters endangered bird species. The bulk of construction is expected to wrap up in 2027. Reporting: El Periódico de Aquí.
