Sagunto phone scam: fake calls from the City Council ask for money and personal data
Sagunto's Local Police warn of calls impersonating the City Council to ask for personal data or money: the council asks for neither by phone.
If your phone rings these days and someone says they are calling on behalf of Sagunto City Council to ask for personal data or money, it is a scam. The Local Police have warned of this after detecting calls of this kind, and have circulated a notice to residents.
The notice was issued after several attempts became known in which fraudsters pose as the council to obtain information from victims or demand a sum of money. The Local Police stress the fact that lets you spot the trick quickly: the City Council does not ask for data or money over the phone.
For a resident who gets such a call, the practical consequence is twofold. Do not hand over the requested information and do not make any payment. The municipal force also recommends reporting any attempt to the authorities, so that other neighbours are not caught off guard.
The National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) gives the same advice: on a suspicious call, do not hand over personal or banking details and, if in doubt, hang up and check the information through official channels. Anyone who wants to ask about a case can call INCIBE's Cybersecurity Helpline, 017, a free and confidential line open every day of the year from 8 am to 11 pm. According to the Ministry for Digital Transformation, the service handled 95,064 enquiries in just six months; the release does not break down how many were about fraudulent calls.
The warning does not say how many calls have been recorded or whether there have been victims, so the scale cannot be measured. What is clear is the rule being asked of residents: distrust any call that uses the City Council's name to request personal information or money, and tell the police.
This is not the first time the council has warned of a scam of this kind. As elperiodic.com reported in September 2019, the council then alerted residents to people posing as home-care workers, and the Social Services councillor advised phoning the social worker before opening the door. Outside the district, Vila-real warned in March 2026 of fraudulent calls in the name of its council over the waste charge, and reminded residents that the council never asks for sensitive personal information.
