Sagunto votes twice in six months: general election 29 November, local vote 23 May 2027

Sagunto will vote twice in under six months: on 29 November 2026 in the general election and on 23 May 2027 in the municipal elections, which will renew the town council elected in 2023.

Sagunto residents will vote twice in less than six months. On Sunday 29 November 2026 they will choose the Congress and the Senate (the two chambers of Spain's parliament), and on Sunday 23 May 2027 they will choose the new municipal council. Royal Decree 806/2026, dated 5 October and published on the 6th in the BOE (the official state gazette), calls elections to both chambers for the first date; Pedro Sánchez had announced the brought-forward vote on Monday. There are 175 days between the two votes.

The timetable for the general election is short. The campaign lasts fifteen days, from 00:00 on Friday 13 November to 24:00 on Friday 27 November. The decree dissolves the Congress of Deputies and the Senate elected on 23 July 2023, and the new chambers will hold their constituent sessions on 23 December at 10:00.

The local elections come five months after those constituent sessions. Electoral law sets them for the fourth Sunday of May, which in 2027 is the 23rd, and requires the calling decrees to be issued on the 55th day before that date, so around the end of March 2027.

What is renewed in May is the municipal Corporation (council) constituted on 17 June 2023. That day Darío Moreno was invested as mayor with the 12 votes of the PSOE (Spain's Socialist party); Iniciativa Porteña (a local party) and Esquerra Unida-Podemos abstained, and the PP (People's Party), Vox and Compromís (a Valencian left-wing bloc) voted against. The council came out of the May 2023 ballot, when the PSOE won with 13,798 votes, 43.49 %, and 12 councillors, one short of the absolute majority, which is 13. The rest was split like this: PP, 5 councillors with 6,028 votes; Iniciativa Porteña, 3 with 3,762; Vox, 2 with 2,508; Compromís, 2; and EU-Unides Podem, 1. On those figures, the five groups other than the PSOE held 13 of the 25 seats, one more than the Socialists.

El Periódico de Aquí published an opinion column on Tuesday about how the two votes connect. Its author argues that the general election will shift moods and either mobilise or demobilise voters, and that with so little time between them it will be hard to separate one from the other entirely. But the author warns against reading the national vote as a first round of the local one: in November Spain chooses its government, and in May residents choose who runs their town. The author also expects plenty of noise and many attempts to carry the November result straight over to May.

According to the column, each resident will then ask a question no national campaign should answer for them: whether they are satisfied with the town they live in. The author lists what voters will have to weigh: the state of neighbourhoods, streets and public spaces, how everyday services work, which projects were delivered and which are still waiting, and the gap between what was announced and what was carried out. The author argues that local politics is different because it can be touched: it is in the pavement people walk on, in street cleaning, in the facilities their children use, in feeling safe walking home and in young people's opportunities.

The columnist concludes that Sagunto needs to open a new stage and that this decision must be taken with the town in mind, not as a knock-on effect of the national result. That is the author's opinion, not a fact or the position of any municipal group, and this text does not carry the views of the other parties.

The calendar thus sets four fixed dates: the campaign from 13 November, polling on the 29th, the constitution of the chambers on 23 December and the municipal elections on 23 May 2027.
