Casino de la Gerencia in Puerto de Sagunto: €1.41 million works with nine-month deadline
Works on the Casino de la Gerencia in Puerto de Sagunto are moving ahead under a €1,412,135.53 contract awarded to the Imesapi-Atil Cobra joint venture, with a nine-month deadline; the mayor visited the site on Tuesday.
After years behind closed doors, the Casino de la Gerencia in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district), an industrial-heritage building, is an active building site again. The Imesapi-Atil Cobra joint venture (UTE) is carrying it out for €1,412,135.53 with taxes and has nine months. That figure is about €96,073 (6.4 %) under the tender budget of €1,508,208.41, and Sagunto City Council expects to fund it with EU FEDER (European Regional Development Fund) money.
On Tuesday 6 October the mayor, Darío Moreno, toured the building with the councillor for Contracting, Javier Raro. Moreno described it as part of the memory of several generations and of local industrial history, and asked that it stop being a fenced-off compound and serve residents again. Raro explained that, once the previous contract was terminated, the priority was to restart with guarantees, and promised constant monitoring by the council until reopening.
What is left to do is mostly structural and technical. The project picks up the previous phase's design with prices brought up to date and adjusted to what is already built: reinforcement of the structure, a glazed roof over the courtyard with its finishing, compliance with current regulations, and new electrical, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. Work also covers furniture, enclosures, the semi-basement and the immediate surroundings. Separately, a contract of €51,076, VAT included, has already been tendered for site management and health and safety coordination.
Waiting had a cost. With part of the exterior joinery and the intermediate courtyard slab out of place, the building was left at the mercy of rain, wind, pigeons and other animals; weeds spread outside and people with no connection to the works managed to get in.
According to the council's release, the first phase dates from 2015: the tiled roof and its supporting structure were fully renewed, facades were renovated, joinery was removed, part of the drainage and plumbing was done, the bar area was reinforced and the courtyard slab was demolished. The council ended up terminating the contract with the builder because it missed the deadline. The sources do not agree on the dates of each stage: municipal documents from April 2022 describe as work in progress the project awarded then, co-funded 50 % by FEDER at a cost of €1,058,975.91, VAT included. For eldiario.es, which reported it in March 2022, the contractor was Víctor Tormo SL (a building firm), for €937,361.49 with VAT, and work began on 12 January 2022. That report put the building at 1,446.10 square metres of floor area.
In August 2025 the council tendered the restart with a budget of €1,508,208.41 (taxes included), eligible for FEDER funding. Valencia Plaza (a regional business news outlet) reported in December 2025 that it was awarded to the Imesapi-Atil Cobra joint venture, with a start planned for early 2026 and a nine-month deadline. Today neither the council nor the press consulted for this report sets a reopening date; the only timing reference available is the nine-month term of the contract.
As for use, the council announced in 2022 a fit-out with a library, multipurpose and meeting rooms, a cafeteria, lifts and accessibility features. elperiodic.com previewed in October 2023 a cultural and community centre with a multipurpose room, a restored double-height courtyard and a lift, co-funded 50 % by the European Union. Neither of today's sources confirms the building's final purpose, which is still the missing detail.
Formerly lodgings for engineers of Altos Hornos de Vizcaya (the steelworks company), the Casino is listed by the council among the oldest and most emblematic buildings in Puerto de Sagunto.
