The city council has put out to tender the first stretch of repaving on Avenida Camp de Morvedre for €241,959.17, with eight weeks of works. It covers the area between Periodista Azzati and Dolores Ibárruri streets in Puerto de Sagunto.

Anyone driving or parking on Avenida Camp de Morvedre in Puerto de Sagunto (the coastal district) will face temporary parking restrictions once repaving starts on the first stretch, from Periodista Azzati street to Dolores Ibárruri street. Sagunto City Council has opened the tender with a base budget of €241,959.17, VAT included.

Of that amount, €41,992.91 is the tax, that is 21%, so the estimated value of the contract without VAT is €199,966.26. The money will come from the municipal budget line for accessibility and the upgrading of public roads, and the contract is being processed through the council's dynamic purchasing system for routine public works.

This stretch is only the start of a full renewal of the avenue. The municipal plan is to work in sections: the next one will run up to Calle del Cid and later up to Calle Virgen del Carmen. The council's stated reason for splitting the project is to reduce disruption to traffic and residents. The municipal information gives no dates for those later phases.

The work responds to the poor state of the roadway, with cracks, crazed areas and localised sinking and deformation, which the council attributes to continuous use and the traffic the road carries. The longitudinal drainage is also deteriorated, so it will be renewed to improve the runoff of rainwater and restore a smooth, safe road.

The councillor for Public Space and Mobility, Javier Raro, presents the tender as the start of renewing one of the city's main avenues. He defends working in sections so that each phase is short and carried out with guarantees, and stresses that it will not be just a change of asphalt: the drainage will also be rebuilt so that water runs off properly and the surface lasts longer.

On the tendered stretch, the top five centimetres of the existing surface will be milled off and a new layer of the same thickness laid over 3,432 square metres of roadway. The total area reaches 3,835 square metres when the longitudinal drainage is counted.

The concrete gutter channel (caz in Spanish), the channel beside the roadway that collects and carries surface water, will be demolished and rebuilt in full over 474 metres. There will also be deep repair of 177 square metres where the road has sunk or deformed: the damaged surface will be removed and the base layers rebuilt before the new asphalt goes down. Sixteen manhole covers and two storm drains will be adjusted to the new road level, and the road markings and street furniture that are affected will be replaced.

The project also sets aside a sum in case the works need to be extended to the junction with Calle Fornás. That extension would go ahead only if the actual measurements justify it.

As for timing, the works will take eight weeks from the signing of the site-layout verification record, the document confirming on the ground that the project can be laid out as designed. Work must begin no later than 60 days after the award is notified, and only once the health and safety documentation has been approved.

To avoid closing the road, the council plans to work gradually, with successive partial occupations and traffic kept moving. Even so, parking will have to be restricted temporarily in the areas being worked on, and provisional signage and any necessary diversions will be put in place.

Puerto de Sagunto is the largest urban nucleus in the Camp de Morvedre district, with 44,428 inhabitants in 2019, a figure that gives an idea of how many people may notice restrictions on one of its main roads.

The contract has yet to be awarded, and the municipal information published does not specify which streets will have parking limits or on what dates.
