Gerencia paella areas in Puerto de Sagunto: new toilets awarded after five failed tenders
Sagunto awards a €130,680 contract for toilets at the Gerencia paella areas, with six cubicles, after five failed tenders.
People who cook paella at the Gerencia paelleros (outdoor paella cooking areas) in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) will finally have public toilets next to the site. The Local Government Board of Sagunto City Council has approved awarding the work to the firm SMART PROJECT BUILDING SL, which will be paid €130,680 including VAT.
The schedule is short. The contractor must start within 30 days at most of being notified of the decision, and the work will take two months. In other words, if the contractor uses the full start-up margin, the toilets could be finished about three months after that notification, whose date the available report does not give.
The building will have six cubicles, two of them adapted for people with reduced mobility. It will also include a room for technical equipment and cleaning supplies, and a space set aside for waste containers. The project covers the connection to the municipal sewage network and the plumbing, lighting and electrical installations needed for the toilets to work.
What stands out about the file is the road it took: the contract was put out to tender five times and all five attempts failed. According to the councillor for Contracting and Investment, Javier Raro, several companies showed interest in the job and then submitted no bid. He blames the delay on rising material costs and a shortage of construction labour, problems that, in his view, hit small public contracts hardest.
Raro admits the file was hard to push through and presents the award as an answer to a demand from users, since the paelleros, heavily used by residents, had until now no proper toilets nearby.
