Compromís asks to reopen the Local Police desk at Sagunto town hall after the Lira thefts
Compromís (Valencian left-wing bloc) wants the Local Police to staff the Municipal Palace 24 hours a day again, after thefts at the Lira Saguntina and slashed tyres in the old town.
Compromís (a Valencian left-wing bloc) has asked the Sagunto government to reopen the Local Police desk (the retén) at the Municipal Palace, the post where residents could go to speak directly to an officer. The party wants in-person service round the clock, with particular stress on afternoons, nights and weekends. The request was made public on 3 November 2026.
The trigger is a run of incidents in the historic centre. There have been thefts from shops, among them a break-in at the headquarters of the Lira Saguntina (a local cultural association), and repeated slashing of tyres on parked vehicles in the Casc Antic, the old quarter. According to Compromís, this has heightened the feeling of insecurity among residents of Ciutat Vella, the old town. The party's municipal spokeswoman, Maria Josep Picó, has led the proposal and argues that Sagunto should bring back a neighbourhood-level police service.
The thefts at the Lira caused material damage and worry among those who run the cultural body. Picó stresses that the attack hits a century-old institution, and so asks for more officers in an area that holds heritage buildings, association headquarters and much of the city's cultural and festive life. The premises matter beyond symbolism: according to the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, the current home of the Lira Saguntina keeps the Roman mosaic of Dirké, which was found in that same building.
The demand has a history. The municipal desk stopped offering round-the-clock service in 2020, and the local government justified the change at the time by a shortage of staff. Compromís maintains that the reorganisation was meant to be temporary. In its view, with the Local Police roster now full, the same reasons no longer apply for keeping the service reduced.
Picó also recalls the practical role of the old desk: it was a reference point where any resident could go directly to officers with an incident. That is why Compromís asks the government of Mayor Darío Moreno to restore permanent police attention at the Municipal Palace. The party believes the measure would bring the service closer to people and improve the perception of safety in the historic centre.
The published information leaves several questions open: the proposal gives no timetable or number of officers required, and the original report records no reply from the governing team. It will fall to the council to decide whether to bring the desk back or keep the arrangement in place since 2020.
