Valenciaport helps protect the coastline at El Grau Vell in Sagunto
The Valencia Port Authority (APV), known as Valenciaport, is taking part in coastal improvement and protection work near El Grau Vell beach, by the Marjal dels Moros wetland in Sagunto, an area of high ecological value.
The Valencia Port Authority, known as Valenciaport, is taking part in work to improve and protect the coastline around El Grau Vell, the beach next to the Marjal dels Moros wetland, in the Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) area. Valenciaport is the public body that runs the three state-owned ports of the Valencian Community — Valencia, Sagunto and Gandía — which explains its direct role in coastal projects around Sagunto.
Marjal dels Moros was declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) in 1996 and is one of the most sensitive wetlands in the Camp de Morvedre district. In some stretches, the wetland's water sits just ten metres from the shoreline, leaving it especially exposed to coastal erosion. Protecting this section of coastline does more than preserve El Grau Vell beach, a site with both archaeological and scenic value — it also strengthens a natural barrier against storm surges, which are becoming more frequent along the Valencian coast.
