Sagunto presents official ceremonial combs to 2026 Fallas queens
Sagunto City Council presented the official ceremonial combs (peinetas) to the 2026 Falleras Mayores, Empar Ríos Sánchez-Mellado and Maria Pozuelo Martín, at an event held on Thursday 23 July at the Mario Monreal Cultural Centre.
The Mario Monreal Cultural Centre hosted an event on Thursday 23 July as part of Sagunto's Fallas festival programme, where the City Council presented the official ceremonial combs (peinetas) to the Falleras Mayores (main festival queens) of the Federació Junta Fallera de Sagunt (FJFS) — Empar Ríos Sánchez-Mellado and Maria Pozuelo Martín.
The peineta is a key piece of the traditional Valencian fallera costume: it sits on top of the hair buns of the traditional hairstyle and is usually crafted in silver-plated or gold-plated brass. Before lighter materials became common in the 20th century, these hair combs were traditionally made from precious metals such as gold and silver, or alloys like brass and steel.
The ceremony, organised by Sagunto City Council, recognises the representative role both Falleras Mayores hold during their term leading the Federació Junta Fallera de Sagunt. According to elperiodic.com, with additional background from Wikipedia.
