Sagunto reinforces Romeu firebreak after 30 years without comprehensive intervention
Sagunto City Council has formally accepted completion of firebreak improvement works at Romeu mountain, funded by EU Next Generation funds, with a total investment of €29,338.
Three decades without systematic forest maintenance had turned the Romeu area into a fire hazard, with dense vegetation significantly raising the wildfire risk. Contractor Aper Ambient SL tackled 9.66 hectares through three targeted measures: selective clearing of shrubs, thinning of tree cover along a 46-metre-wide strip, and establishment of two strategic forest management zones totalling 1.2 hectares to contain fire spread and ease access for firefighters. All vegetation debris was handled on site to keep the environmental footprint low.
The PR-CV 319 hiking trail (Ruta dels Senglars) passes partly through this area, so the works directly improve safety for walkers. The project sits within the Sagunto Local Forest Fire Prevention Plan (PLPIF) and the Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD). Romeu mountain belongs to the Sierra Calderona Natural Park — protected since 2002, it spans 18,019 hectares across 12 municipalities in the Province of Valencia. According to aytosagunto.es, the intervention is designed to reconcile ecosystem preservation with sporting and tourist use of the hillside.
