Sagunto town hall reinforces street cleaning with 30 new SAG workers
The municipal company SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión) has hired 30 new employees to reinforce street cleaning in Sagunto, weeks after a strike left the city with piled-up rubbish.
Sagunto town hall has announced a boost to the city's street-cleaning service with the hiring of 30 new workers at SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión), the public municipal company in charge of cleaning and waste collection across the whole municipality. The move comes just weeks after a strike by cleaning staff caused rubbish to pile up at many points around the city, a dispute that was resolved after an agreement between the company and the local administration at the end of July.
According to municipal sources, SAG will keep its hiring process open over the coming weeks, so anyone interested in joining the team can check current job openings through the company's employment portal. SAG is legally registered as a company that is 100% owned by the town hall, not an outside private contractor, a detail that explains its status as an in-house municipal body for providing these services.
The extra staff adds to the recent arrival of three new side-loading rubbish trucks, which started operating in July and have already increased the capacity and frequency of waste collection in the city's neighbourhoods. On top of this, a wider modernisation plan is under way, including the replacement of bins across the whole municipality and the renewal of street litter bins.
Sagunto's mayor, Darío Moreno, stressed that clean streets are one of residents' main demands, and said the town hall is putting in "more resources than ever" so the improvement is felt in every neighbourhood, from the historic old town to Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district). Moreno also noted that the council has tripled its investment in SAG in recent years, and asked residents to help keep public spaces in good condition.
SAG itself describes its mission as looking after the care, order and cleanliness of the whole municipality, along with other services for large vehicles, a scope that goes beyond simple rubbish collection and includes broader urban-maintenance tasks.
For residents, the announcement lands at a sensitive moment: summer usually drives up waste generation because of higher visitor numbers and activity around the port, right as memories of June's strike remain fresh. The larger workforce, together with the new machinery, is meant to prevent a repeat of the rubbish build-up that caused resident complaints only a few weeks ago.
