The Compromís municipal group has filed a motion calling for improved mobile phone coverage along the seafront of Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district).
The Compromís municipal group has formally asked for improved mobile phone coverage along the seafront of Puerto de Sagunto, the coastal part of the municipality that sees much of the town's summer activity and a steady flow of beachgoers and walkers. The Valencian party has filed its request as a motion for the August plenary session, in which it also calls for urgent action to guarantee adequate coverage across the whole municipality, including outlying, scattered settlements away from the town centre.
The group's spokesperson, Maria Josep Picó, will defend the motion before the plenary and argues that Sagunto must prioritise a city model that puts technology at the service of people: in her view, a smart city is not just about adding more technology, but about using it to build a more sustainable, efficient, accessible and fair municipality, so that no neighbourhood is left behind.
According to the motion itself, the seafront of Puerto de Sagunto is a lively part of town all year round: hundreds of families live there, a considerable number of people work there, and it is home to intense commercial, sporting and social activity that grows noticeably in summer with the arrival of tourists. Despite this, the area keeps struggling with poor mobile and data coverage that complicates everyday tasks such as communicating, working remotely, making electronic payments, accessing digital services and, in certain situations, contacting emergency services.
For Compromís, the digital divide is also a matter of territorial equity: it argues that all residents, regardless of which neighbourhood they live in, should have equal access to digital services, job opportunities and public resources. Picó insists that the town hall must play an active coordinating role with telecom operators and the relevant authorities to secure connectivity that strengthens a more innovative, cohesive and resilient municipality.
Specifically, the motion asks the town hall to press the operators serving the municipality to draw up an updated mobile coverage map, to demand urgent action to cover the entire municipality, to seek the collaboration of Spain's State Secretariat for Telecommunications and the regional government, to fold connectivity improvements into the town's smart city and digital transformation strategy as essential infrastructure, and to pass these agreements on to the relevant authorities and operators.
Compromís hopes to win the backing of the other municipal groups so the request can move forward with the broadest possible consensus at the August plenary session.
