Compromís spells out school air-conditioning plan with figures and AEMET data
Compromís has laid out details of its motion to air-condition Sagunto's schools, including a 100-million-euro-a-year consortium and climate data from AEMET, days after first announcing the general request.
The Compromís municipal group has spelled out the details of its school air-conditioning motion, first announced earlier this week, which councillor Maria Josep Soriano will defend at the next municipal plenary session. The proposal calls for an inter-institutional plan for full maintenance and air-conditioning of Sagunto's schools, and also demands that the Valencian regional government comply with rulings from the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Comunitat Valenciana (TSJCV, the region's top court) requiring it to reinstate Plan Edificant school building projects with full air conditioning, which the current regional government cancelled.
The TSJCV is the highest judicial body in the Valencian Community, based in the city of Valencia, and its rulings set a clear legal limit on the regional government's decisions over school infrastructure, which gives legal weight to Compromís's demand.
The motion draws on data from Spain's national weather agency, AEMET: according to the party, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 have been the four hottest years on record in the Valencian Community, and nine of the ten hottest years have come since 2014. Compromís argues that extreme heat directly affects students' health and performance, causing effects such as poor concentration, reduced learning ability, fatigue, dehydration, headaches, heat stress, and worsening respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, especially during the first and last weeks of the school year.
Financially, the proposal calls for setting up an inter-institutional consortium funded with 100 million euros a year for maintaining and air-conditioning schools, and also asks for the 306-million-euro-a-year investment that the previous regional government had planned under Plan Edificant to be kept in place. Compromís is also asking the plenary to back a request from the Municipal School Council for Sagunto to be declared a priority action area under the future Plan EduClima or Plan de Confort Térmico (Thermal Comfort Plan) 2026-2029.
For families with children at the town's public schools, the initiative now provides concrete figures and timelines that were missing from the original announcement, just two days before the proposal goes to a vote at the ordinary August plenary session.
