Restored locomotive 2502 joins Puerto de Sagunto open-air heritage trail
Sagunto City Council has completed the full restoration of locomotive 2502, now displayed beside a replica of the Trenillo station on Avenida Adolfo Suárez.
Locomotive 2502, a symbol of Puerto de Sagunto's (coastal industrial district) industrial past, has been fully restored and equipped with a protective fence and an explanatory panel. It now forms an outdoor heritage ensemble alongside the Barça de Begoña, a traditional flat-bottomed boat from the area. Mayor Darío Moreno described the project as part of a broader plan to turn Avenida Adolfo Suárez into an open-air museum. The locomotive belongs to the era of the Altos Hornos del Mediterráneo (AHM), the integrated steelworks that at peak employed 3,332 workers and shut down on 5 October 1984, marking the end of the steel industry that shaped Puerto de Sagunto's identity. Preserving these industrial relics keeps that memory accessible to residents and visitors alike. According to the mayor's social media post.
