Sagunto leads European REWEAVE bid to revive its industrial waterfront
Sagunto City Council is heading the REWEAVE project under the EU's URBACT Action Networks programme, together with six other European cities, to transform the Pantalà pier area and the Gerència district into an open, sustainable urban corridor.
The local council is leading the REWEAVE candidacy, which aims to turn Sagunto's coastal and industrial fringe into a continuous, accessible urban corridor. The project brings together seven cities from Spain, Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Greece, and Serbia — all facing similar challenges around the regeneration of industrial and port areas that shaped their identities. In Sagunto's case, the plan links the Gerència zone, the Albereda del Consell park, and the historic Pantalà pier into a single integrated space.
The initiative falls under URBACT IV (2021–2027), an EU programme funded by FEDER (European Regional Development Fund), which currently supports 40 Action Networks involving 340 partner cities in 29 countries — each partnership running for two years to develop transferable urban solutions. If the REWEAVE candidacy is accepted, the network would launch in November 2026 and run until April 2029, with involvement from local associations and economic actors. Natalia Antonino, councillor for European Projects, said the initiative aims to stitch together the city's strategic spaces under sustainable and inclusive criteria, according to El Periódico de Aquí.
