Sagunto's Northern Beaches Lose Their Restored Sand After First Waves

The beaches of Almardà, Corinto and Malvarrosa on Sagunto's northern coastline have begun to lose the sand deposited just days ago under a coastal restoration project funded by Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition.

Sand restoration work on Sagunto's northern beaches has only just finished, but the first waves have already started washing the new material away. The operation involved more than one million cubic metres of sand financed with European funds through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. The Amparo Peris residents' association reported that drops of up to one and a half metres formed on Corinto beach after the first swells — a clear sign that the sediment has not yet stabilised.

This episode follows a motion approved unanimously at the city council plenary session, which agreed to study the installation of smart sensor buoys at the three beaches to monitor sediment movement and coastal change. The motion also called for permanent structural solutions such as artificial reefs and submerged breakwaters.

The repeated erosion of these beaches is a chronic concern for Sagunto's northern coastline, whose recovery has so far depended on cyclical investment without a long-term fix. According to elperiodic.com.
