Vegetation fire on camino de la Torreta mobilises firefighters in Sagunto
A scrubland fire that broke out at 16:28 on Wednesday spread through allotment fields between the A-7 motorway and the Almardà and Corinto residential areas, in the northern part of Sagunto's municipal territory.
A column of smoke visible from several points across northern Sagunto (a city roughly 30 km north of Valencia) alerted residents on Wednesday afternoon. The fire started on the camino de la Torreta, in a strip of allotment gardens between the A-7 motorway and the Almardà and Corinto urbanisations.
Two crews and a sergeant from the Sagunto station of the Valencia Provincial Fire Service Consortium (Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Valencia) were deployed alongside a forest fire unit from the Valencian Government — a joint response by two separate emergency bodies, indicating concerns about the fire spreading. The exact extent of the fire and its causes have not yet been officially confirmed.
Sagunto's northern boundary adjoins the Sierra Calderona Natural Park, declared in 2002, which covers 18,019 hectares of Mediterranean woodland across twelve municipalities. This makes fires in the northern zone a priority for forest services. According to El Periódico de Aquí.
