Sagunto City Council and more than 155 local hospitality businesses are joining the seventh edition of the Ecovidrio Green Flag challenge, which rewards coastal towns for recycling glass packaging.

For another summer, bars, restaurants and cafés in Sagunto will compete for the Bandera Verde de la Sostenibilidad (Green Flag for Sustainability), awarded by Ecovidrio — a non-profit managing Spain's integrated glass-packaging recovery system — to the top two municipalities in the Valencian Community. Across Spain, 116 coastal towns take part in the contest; 28 of them are in the Valencian Community. Winners are ranked by the volume of glass collected, the share of hospitality businesses participating, and the reach of the local campaign. In last year's sixth edition, over 155 Sagunto venues took part but the prize went to Calpe and Peñíscola from a field of 47 Valencian candidates. At national level, the 2025 campaign produced strong results: the 116 participating towns jointly handled 66,800 tonnes of glass packaging — a volume equivalent to avoiding 38,700 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and saving 47,700 MWh of energy. The hospitality sector generates roughly half of all glass waste, placing its involvement at the heart of any progress toward a circular economy.
