Sagunto opens more than 30 climate shelters to protect residents from extreme heat

Sagunto City Council has activated a network of more than 30 climate shelters — free air-conditioned public spaces — to keep residents safe during heatwave episodes.

The municipal initiative makes spaces available across different neighbourhoods and districts of Sagunto, including libraries, civic centres and other public facilities. The shelters stay open on extended hours whenever heat alerts are in effect, and are particularly aimed at elderly residents, children and people without air conditioning at home.

The measure is part of the council's climate adaptation plan, which has focused for several years on reducing the impact of extreme heat on vulnerable groups. According to Spain's national weather agency AEMET, a heatwave is defined as at least three consecutive days during which a significant share of weather stations exceeds the 95th percentile for maximum temperatures — a condition that poses particular risks to people over 65, those with chronic illnesses, and residents in urban areas affected by the heat-island effect.

Residents can find the updated list of shelters on the Sagunto City Council website and social media channels. Information provided by the Ayuntamiento de Sagunto — aytosagunto.es.
