Canet d'En Berenguer mayors face Court of Auditors in 'Vitas de Amarre' hotel case
A February 2026 Valencian High Court ruling ordered Canet d'En Berenguer council to pay €276,375 to Vitas de Amarre after a 2002 hotel concession was awarded on coastal land with an undisclosed public-domain restriction.
The Valencian High Court (TSJCV) issued judgment 118/2026 on 24 February 2026, ordering Canet d'En Berenguer council — in Camp de Morvedre comarca near Sagunto — to pay €276,375.55 plus interest to the company Vitas de Amarre. The case originates in a 2001–2002 beachfront hotel concession granted on land subject to a coastal public-domain easement that was never disclosed to the bidder. Spain's Court of Auditors (Tribunal de Cuentas), founded in 1437 and holding exclusive jurisdiction over the accounting liability of public officials who cause damage through misconduct or gross negligence, opened proceedings C93/2026 on 19 May 2026 against mayors and council members since 2001, along with secretaries and auditors. Municipal secretary José Antonio Sancho Sempere, convicted in 2022 for malfeasance in a separate case, is also linked to this file. Mayor Pere Antoni is legally obliged to pursue recovery proceedings against those responsible once the payment is made. Source: elperiodicodeaqui.com.
