Sagunto holds minute of silence over suspected gender-based murder in Alicante
Sagunto's Equality Department called a noon gathering on Thursday at municipal buildings to condemn the suspected machista (gender-based) murder of a 48-year-old woman in Alicante.
Municipal councillors, city staff, residents and civic groups gathered at Sagunto's public buildings on Thursday 4 June at midday to observe a minute of silence condemning the latest suspected gender-based killing, which occurred in Alicante. The event was organised by the city's Equality Department (Área de Igualdad).
Official figures show 47 women were killed in machista violence across Spain in 2025; 23 more have been killed so far in 2026. Since national statistics began in 2003, the cumulative total stands at 1,364 murdered women. Since 2013, 68 minors have also been recorded as victims; three murders by violencia vicaria (indirect gender violence targeting children) have occurred in 2026.
The legal backbone behind institutional responses is Ley Orgánica 1/2004 — Spain's comprehensive gender-violence protection law, in force since 28 January 2005, which requires coordinated action across health, justice, security and social services. Anyone who suspects a case of violence is urged to call 016, the government helpline run by the Ministry of Equality: it operates 24 hours a day in 53 languages and calls do not appear on the phone bill. Emergencies can also be reported to 112. According to Sagunto City Council.
