Compromís calls for environmental protection of 42 hectares around Sagunto Castle
The Valencianist political group Compromís is asking Sagunto City Council to begin the process of declaring 42 hectares of the Castillo de Sagunto (Sagunto Castle) hillside as a protected natural area.
The Compromís municipal group has put forward a proposal to safeguard the natural surroundings of the hill on which Sagunto Castle stands — a site declared a National Monument in 1931 (listed as BIC, code RI-51-0000972), whose walls stretch approximately 800 metres enclosing seven defensive enclosures with Iberian, Roman, Islamic and medieval remains.
The initiative seeks a formal declaration from the Valencian Government recognising the 42 hectares as a paraje natural municipal (protected local nature area, or PNM). Under Valencian law (Act 11/1994 on Protected Natural Spaces), this designation prohibits urban development on the land and requires an approved Management Plan from the Regional Ministry of Environment.
Compromís argues that the hillside hosts high-value native flora and natural viewpoints overlooking the Camp de Morvedre district that currently lack legal protection against development pressure. A PNM designation would give the council a solid framework for managing access and conservation. According to elperiodic.com, the group hopes the full council will back the proposal at its next plenary session.
