Sagunto mayor calls centenarian tribute his favourite act in office as city sets new record
Mayor Darío Moreno shared on social media that the annual tribute to centenary residents is his favourite moment as mayor, noting that 2026 brought a record 13 honourees.
Sagunto mayor Darío Moreno Lerga took to his personal Facebook profile to express pride at the annual tribute to the municipality's centenarian residents, describing the ceremony as his favourite act since taking office. This year set an unprecedented mark for the city: 13 people born in 1926 received official recognition for reaching one hundred years of age in 2026.
The figure reflects Spain's notably high life expectancy. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), Spain had 13,020 centenarians in 2021, with women accounting for roughly 80% of that total — a pattern mirrored in Sagunto, where ten of the thirteen honourees are women.
The ceremony took place at the Mario Monreal Cultural Centre as part of the 21st Cultural Week for Older Adults, organised by the Municipal Department for Social Services. Mayor Moreno publicly extended his congratulations to all residents reaching their centenary. According to the mayor's personal Facebook account.
