Sagunto holds silence for two suspected gender-based killings
On Wednesday 22 July, Sagunto's Equality department held a minute's silence for the suspected gender-based murders of a 29-year-old woman in Málaga and a 45-year-old woman in Toledo.
The gathering brought together councillors, council staff, residents and local associations outside Sagunto's public buildings in a shared gesture of condemnation. The Equality department puts the 2025 toll at 47 women killed in gender-based violence across Spain, with 31 confirmed cases so far in 2026. The historical count, which began in 2003, has reached 1,372 women killed, a figure that matches the one published by the statistics portal of Spain's Ministry of Equality (Ministerio de Igualdad). Over the same period, 68 minors have died from this cause since 2013, and the 2026 total also includes three killings classified as vicarious violence (crimes against children used to harm a mother). The Equality department stresses that anyone who suspects a case of abuse has a civic duty to report it, calling 112 for emergencies or 016, a separate national helpline that operates alongside local police numbers.
