Sagunto honours Silvia Piera for her double national trail-running title
Sagunto City Council honoured local athlete Silvia Piera this week, after she claimed two Spanish trail-running titles in the same weekend in Palencia province.
Winning two Spanish titles on the same weekend, in two different events, is the feat that brought Silvia Piera, who races for Club Atletisme Cárnicas Serrano (local running club), to a council reception this week. It all happened in May, in Palencia province, northern Spain: first came victory in the Subida Vertical (vertical kilometre) race in Brañosera, and just hours later another win in the Carrera de Montaña Classic in Aguilar de Campoo. That double placed her 23rd in the women's overall standings, ahead of many of the country's best specialists. The vertical kilometre discipline requires climbing 1,000 metres of positive elevation in under 5 kilometres, with sections reaching a 20% gradient. At the reception, Mayor Darío Moreno and Sports Councillor Javier Timón highlighted the athlete's journey: she combines training with her job as a schoolteacher and has overcome several injuries to reach this point.
