Sagunto honours Silvia Piera's two national trail-running golds
Sagunto City Council honoured local athlete Silvia Piera, from Club Atletisme Cárnicas Serrano, after she won two Spanish championship titles in the Máster F45 category in mountain races held in Palencia last May.
Piera took gold in the Subida Vertical de Brañosera and repeated the win days later in the Carrera de Montaña Classic in Aguilar de Campoo, both part of the Spanish Trail Running Championships organised by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA). She also finished 23rd in the overall women's ranking, among the country's top specialists.
The council recognition, led by the Department of Physical Activity, Health and Sports, was attended by mayor Darío Moreno and councillor Javier Timón, who praised her career despite past injuries and her work as a teacher, which she combines with competitive running.
Piera runs for Club Atletisme Cárnicas Serrano, a Sagunto-based club (named after its founding meat-products company) formally founded in 1988 after co-founder Blas Serrano challenged himself to run a marathon with company workers. Brañosera (Palencia), host of one of her two wins, is considered Spain's first town council, having received its founding charter back in the year 824.
