Fire in transformer forces evacuation of Sagunto power station
A fire in a transformer at the combined-cycle power station in Puerto de Sagunto forced an evacuation yesterday, with no injuries reported.
The alert came in at 07:46 on Tuesday, when fire broke out in a transformer at the combined-cycle power station in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal industrial district). The Valencia Fire Consortium sent five crews from the Sagunto, Pobla de Farnals and Paterna stations, along with a sergeant, a sector chief and an officer, who worked together with the plant's own technicians to put out the flames. Firefighting and inspection work ended at 10:22, almost three hours after the alert.
The plant had been evacuated as a precaution, and its automatic sprinklers activated as soon as the fire was detected. No injuries were reported among workers or emergency crews.
The plant is fully owned and operated by Naturgy (Spanish energy company). It has three gas-fired units with a combined output of 1,200 megawatts and has been running since 2007, following a €478 million investment. According to El Periódico de Aquí, with additional data from Wikipedia.
