Vall de Segó marks 25 years of the Benicalaf pilgrimage on 2 August
Vall de Segó, a group of villages in the Camp de Morvedre district, will hold the 25th edition of the Benicalaf pilgrimage on 2 August, bringing together five nearby towns at the abandoned village of Benicalaf.
The day will begin with participants leaving Faura at 5:00 am, while residents of Benavites will set off half an hour earlier to meet them and finish the walk together to the church of Santiago Apóstol. Walkers can cover the route on foot or ride the traditional "trenet" (a small tourist train), organised especially to help older people and those with reduced mobility take part. Once in Benicalaf, the Associació Amics de Benicalaf (Friends of Benicalaf association) and Benavites town hall will hand out a traditional "sobaquillo" breakfast (a rustic country-style meal) along with drinks and fruit, before the trenet makes several return trips to the villages.
Benicalaf was once an independent municipality until a royal decree in 1856 merged it into Benavites, and the only building still standing from the old village is its 18th-century church, listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (a nationally protected heritage site). To mark the 25th edition, the association has produced special commemorative scarves, and in 2027 it will celebrate 25 years since its own founding.
