Gilet to hand out wildfire safety guide to every household

Gilet, a Camp de Morvedre municipality next to Sagunto, will give every home a free self-protection guide with evacuation maps for its eight housing estates.

Gilet sits in the south-east of the Sierra Calderona mountains, next to the Palancia river basin, an area of pine forest and Mediterranean scrubland where several housing estates — including Santo Espíritu, La Paz, Balcón de la Peña and Pla d'Aguiló — sit right up against the woodland. That closeness between homes and forest is exactly why the town council has turned its technical Wildfire Self-Protection Plan into a simple, accessible manual for residents. The guide has two parts: tips to reduce fire risk (plot maintenance, preventive habits) and an emergency protocol that stresses always following instructions from firefighting services. Its centrepiece is a set of evacuation maps for the municipality's eight housing estates, each with its own legend, so residents can quickly find escape routes and reference points if an evacuation order is given. Environment councillor Juanjo Melchor argues that prevention remains the best tool against wildfires and is urging families to keep the guide handy and get familiar with it before the riskiest part of summer arrives. According to El Periódico de Aquí, with additional background from Wikipedia on Gilet.
