Coque Malla, Sandra Monfort and Estrella Morente headline Sagunt a Escena's music line-up

Sagunto's Roman Theatre (Teatre Romà) will host concerts by Coque Malla, Sandra Monfort and Estrella Morente this August, as part of the 43rd edition of the Sagunt a Escena festival, organised by the Valencian Institute of Culture.

Music runs through much of this summer's programme at Sagunt a Escena, a festival organised by the Conselleria (regional department) for Education, Culture and Universities through the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC) and now more than four decades old. Festival director María José Mora says the music line-up connects Valencian roots and flamenco with the social critique of contemporary theatre. The programme opens on 8 August with 'La ópera de los tres centavos' ('The Threepenny Opera'), Bertolt Brecht's classic starring Coque Malla — who at 15 founded the rock band Los Ronaldos, which he led from 1987 to 1998 — staged by director Mario Vega with musical direction by Miguel Malla and set in interwar London. On 15 August, Sandra Monfort presents 'Terra de guapes', blending music, dance and Valencian folklore, and the cycle closes on 22 August with a flamenco concert by Estrella Morente. Outside the theatre, the free Off Romà programme brings shows to Sagunto's squares, including 'Bailarina a la carta' by company La Siamesa on 6 August. According to El Periódico de Aquí, with additional details from Sagunt a Escena's official website (IVC) and from Wikipedia on Coque Malla.
