Sagunto ends cleaning strike after agreeing pay rises for staff
The city council and SAG's staff committee reached a pay deal that will restore the service after seven days of rubbish piling up in the streets.
Seven days after the walkouts began, Sagunto can breathe again: the city council and the workers' committee at SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión, the municipal waste and cleaning company) — represented by the UGT, CCOO and CGT unions — have closed the deal that ends the waste collection and street cleaning strike. The dispute stood out because it coincided with the town's patron saint festival and with celebrations of Spain's World Cup win, two events that multiplied the rubbish on the streets right when the service was running on skeleton staff. The agreed terms include a 4.5% pay rise for 2027 payslips and a further 0.5% from January 2026 if annual inflation tops 1.5%. Staff also gain a Sunday and public-holiday bonus starting at €60 in 2027 and rising to €70 in 2028; bringing that bonus forward, at €50, from September this year, turned out to be the piece that finally unblocked the talks. The deal also adds €250 for each voluntary extraordinary weekend shift, an eighth seniority increment, and a school allowance of €50 to €80 for staff's children, alongside a follow-up committee to monitor compliance.
