United opposition demands mayor solve Sagunto cleaning strike
Three opposition parties — PP, Compromís and Iniciativa Porteña — are demanding that Mayor Darío Moreno urgently resolve the SAG cleaning strike, which is worsening Sagunto's streets during the patron saint festival.
The strike paralysing street cleaning in Sagunto has achieved something unusual: uniting PP, Iniciativa Porteña and Compromís behind a single demand — that Mayor Darío Moreno's government unblock talks with staff at SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión), the company running urban cleaning citywide. The parties say the fallout is already visible: overflowing bins and a rodent infestation in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district), just as the patron saint festival draws more people to the city.
PP spokesman Ximo Catalán points to years of poor decisions and notes that SAG is handling more money than ever — after a recent rise in the household waste tax — without that improving the service. Eduardo Márquez, of Iniciativa Porteña, is demanding that the mayor, who also chairs SAG, get personally involved in the talks, and questions the spending on private security, with five guards a day for ten days. Compromís, through Albert Oliver and Maria Josep Picó, is calling for the resignation of councillor Jorge Vidal, who oversees the company, and says the local government met only with the UGT union while CGT and CCOO waited outside the mayor's office.
