Compromís demands Jorge Vidal resign over Sagunto cleaning conflict
Compromís per Sagunt is demanding an urgent solution to the labour dispute at SAG, the municipal cleaning company, and repeats its call for councillor Jorge Vidal, who oversees the firm, to resign if he cannot resolve the cleaning strike.
Compromís spokeswoman Maria Josep Picó described the state of Sagunto's streets as "unsustainable", pointing to insect and rodent infestations, unusable playgrounds and broken glass in squares and the fairground area. The Valencian nationalist party is demanding the local government unblock talks with staff at SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión), the public company in charge of street cleaning and urban upkeep, to restore normal service. Picó repeated her call for councillor Jorge Vidal, who runs the company, to step aside if he cannot handle the conflict, and criticised a widely shared image of four councillors cleaning Camí Reial street alongside relatives after Saturday's traditional water fight (xopà), calling it a show of "little empathy" towards striking workers. Compromís also questions the management model of the PSOE and Esquerra Unida government, saying it has expanded SAG's management structure and outsourced services without improving cleaning or working conditions, while the waste collection fee has doubled. That increase partly stems from Law 7/2022 (Spain's circular-economy waste law), which for the first time requires town councils to set a specific waste-service fee.
