Sagunto celebrates Spain's World Cup title as the Glorieta fills up
Spain won its second World Cup title after beating Argentina thanks to an extra-time goal by Ferran Torres, and Sagunto celebrated at the three viewing points set up by the City Council.
With the Glorieta — Cronista Chabret square — packed with fans before kick-off, hundreds of residents watched the final on giant screens set up by the City Council and the local peñas (festival associations) federation. The same scene played out at the Centro Cívico in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) and at the Voro Alandí building in Almardà, the other two viewing points arranged for the occasion. For over 100 minutes tension outweighed noise, until forward Ferran Torres — born in Foios (a town in Valencia's l'Horta Nord area) and now a Barcelona striker — scored the winning goal in the 106th minute against Argentina. Celebrations broke out and lasted several minutes, with hugs and chanting at all three gathering points. It is Torres's second major title with the national team, after Euro 2024, and his nickname "el valenciano" (the Valencian) was repeated most often among Sagunto fans during the celebration.
