City council honours BM Morvedre youth team, Spain's runner-up
Sagunto's youth handball team finished runner-up at the Spanish championship in May, after winning the regional title and the Casabermeja (Málaga) qualifying round.
The ceremony, held at the René Marigil sports hall, was attended by mayor Darío Moreno, sports councillor Javier Timón, club vice-president José Bonet, coach Juan Ignacio García, and the players with their families. In the Spanish championship final phase, played 27-31 May among eight teams, Morvedre won all three group matches, beat Fundación Agustinos Alicante in the semi-final, and lost the final to Aula Valladolid. The team had already won the Valencian Community title and the qualifying round in Casabermeja, near Málaga. The club, founded in 2012, fields its first team in the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola, Spain's top women's handball division, playing its home games at the same René Marigil hall that hosted this reception. Vice-president José Bonet said the runner-up finish crowns a season in which Morvedre won every regional youth championship. Team captains Vega López and Nayara Martín thanked the council and the coaching staff for their support.
