Elderly Quartell resident survives cardiac arrest at municipal pool
A resident of Quartell's care home for older people was successfully resuscitated this Friday after suffering cardiac arrest in the municipal pool's jacuzzi, thanks to the quick response of the lifeguard and health teams.
The man, a resident of the town's care home for the elderly, began showing signs of drowning inside the jacuzzi and went into cardiac arrest. The lifeguard on duty pulled him out of the water without delay, following the emergency protocol set for such situations, and immediately raised the alarm.
Once out of the jacuzzi, medical staff performed chest compressions as part of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) until they managed to stabilise him. He was then taken by ambulance to Sagunto Hospital to establish the cause of the episode. Doctors from Quartell's local health clinic arrived first, and after a call to Spain's 112 emergency line, a SAMU unit and an SVB unit were also sent: the former carries a doctor and a nurse, while the latter is staffed only by two technicians trained in CPR, with no medical doctor on board.
The pool facilities stayed closed between midday and 2pm while the emergency was handled. The town council noted that having trained staff at municipal pools proved decisive for the outcome. Information from El Periódico de Aquí.
