Sagunto holds a minute's silence for Los Gallardos fire victims
Sagunto City Council gathered outside its building this Friday for a minute's silence for the victims of the Los Gallardos wildfire (Almería province), a tribute called by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).
Members of the Municipal Corporation, council staff, residents and local groups gathered outside Sagunto's town hall for a minute's silence, joining a call by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) as a gesture of mourning for those who died in the Los Gallardos wildfire, in the southern province of Almeria. FEMP, founded in 1981, brings together more than 7,400 town councils and provincial bodies across Spain and manages a 2026 budget of nearly 34 million euros, largely funded by the national government; it asked all member municipalities to join the tribute. The fire, which broke out on the evening of 9 July after a fallen power pole damaged electrical wiring, killed eleven people and injured eight, making it one of the deadliest wildfires in recent Spanish history. Sagunto joins other towns that have held similar silences outside municipal buildings in recent days over events that have shocked the country. According to Sagunto City Council and elperiodic.com.
