Street-cleaning workers in Sagunto call an indefinite strike

Staff at SAG, Sagunto's public street-cleaning company, will start an indefinite strike on 15 July after talks on a labour agreement unrenewed since 2012 stalled.

The strike call passed with 104 votes in favour among 185 employees who took part in an internal vote, according to CGT, the union backing the action. It is a union with anarcho-syndicalist roots, formed in 1989, well established both in cleaning services and in public administrations across the Valencian Community. The union says talks on a new labour agreement have been open for more than a year, since staff formally challenged the existing one in mid-2025 to demand better pay and working conditions. CGT calls the offer the company presented on 1 July to the works council and Sagunto City Council insufficient, and also denounces what it calls a gradual privatisation of the service: six private companies now do work once handled by SAG alone, which the union says raises costs and lowers efficiency. The union is asking residents for understanding, insisting the protest aims for decent working conditions, not to harm people who rely on the cleaning service. According to El Periódico de Aquí.
