Compromís confirms Maria Josep Picó as candidate for Sagunto mayor
The Compromís party assembly has confirmed Maria Josep Picó, currently spokesperson for the party's group on Sagunto City Council, as its candidate for mayor.
Compromís is a coalition of four Valencian parties — Més-Compromís, Iniciativa del Poble Valencià, Verds Equo del País Valencià and Coalició Compromís — with 725 councillors across the Valencian Community. Picó, a Journalism lecturer and vice-dean at the Universitat de València, entered Congress as a substitute for then-spokesperson Joan Baldoví, who gave up his seat in May 2023 to become Compromís spokesperson in the Valencian regional parliament (Les Corts). In Sagunto, Compromís governed from 2015 to 2019 under mayor Josep Francesc Fernández Carrasco, before losing the mayor's office in the following election. In the 2023 local elections it dropped from 5 to just 2 council seats, well behind PSPV-PSOE (socialists, 12 seats) and PP (Popular Party, 5 seats) on a 21-seat council that also includes Iniciativa Porteña, Vox and EUPV. Against that backdrop, Picó's confirmation marks the start of the party's run-up to the next municipal elections, where it will try to win back ground from current mayor Darío Moreno Lerga (PSPV-PSOE). The original report does not yet give further details on the platform or the rest of the list. Source: elperiodic.com.
