Sagunto holds minute of silence for suspected gender-based murders in Málaga and Alicante
Sagunto City Council's Equality Department called a minute of silence today for the suspected gender-based murders of a 36-year-old woman in Málaga and a 55-year-old woman and her 20-year-old daughter in Alicante.
Council members, town hall staff, residents, and local groups and associations gathered outside public buildings to express their condemnation. These gatherings follow protocols required under Organic Law 1/2004 on Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, the Spanish law that sets the institutional response to such cases. According to official figures, 2025 ended with 47 women murdered, and 27 have already been killed so far in 2026; since 2003, when records began, 1,368 gender-based murders have been counted, 68 minors have been killed as victims since 2013, and there have been three cases of vicarious violence (murders of children to harm the mother) so far this year. The Equality Department reminds residents that anyone who suspects a case of abuse should call 016 or 112, and that the Women's Support Service is available Monday to Friday on 96 265 58 89 or via WhatsApp at 607 248 363.
