Sagunt a Escena 2026: Golden Age classics and inclusive theatre at the Roman stage
The festival opens 1 August with an IVC production based on Guillem de Castro and runs six titles through 23 August, mixing Golden Age dramaturgy with contemporary stage work.
The defining ambition of Sagunt a Escena 2026 is a conversation between tradition and the present. The curtain rises on 1 August with a comedy by Guillem de Castro — the foremost playwright of the Valencian Golden Age school, whose work on the Cid directly inspired Corneille — staged by the IVC with ten Valencian performers. The same opening night also features an outdoor show revisiting Lope de Vega and Calderón through a modern lens.
Through August, the Roman Theatre hosts a range that stretches well beyond the classical canon: a free-form version of Hamlet performed entirely by actors with Down syndrome (one of the edition's most anticipated premieres), a Lope de Vega classic, and a production starring well-known figures from Spain's theatrical scene. The programme extends to the Casa de Cultura in Puerto de Sagunto with a show aimed at teenage audiences. Fourteen of the festival's nineteen companies are based in the Valencian Community, reinforcing its role as a regional performing-arts platform. Tickets for the Roman Theatre are on sale through the IVC. According to the IVC.
