Alternatura a l'Escola closes fifth edition with record participation
Sagunto City Council's nature and inclusion programme reached 1,583 participants in the 2025-2026 school year, with 33 outdoor excursions and 37 awareness sessions.
The Alternatura a l'Escola — Inclusive Project, run by Sagunto City Council's departments of Sports and the Environment, wrapped up its fifth edition with more participating schools than in any previous year. During the 2025-2026 school year, 37 awareness talks reached 1,293 pupils and 76 teachers, while 33 outings into natural surroundings involved 1,583 people in total — including fifth- and sixth-year primary students, pupils with functional diversity, and teaching staff.
The programme's inclusive design follows the mandate of Spain's LOMLOE education law, which requires mainstream and special-education schools to participate jointly in activities. The inclusion coordinator of CEE Albanta (a local special-education centre) contributed to every session. This fifth edition also marks the first time the programme extended beyond Sagunto's borders: schools from Petrés and Benifairó de les Valls — two neighbouring municipalities in the Camp de Morvedre comarca — joined for the first time, which accounts for the record school count. Educators from the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park interpretation centre and a municipal police officer specialising in mountain biking also contributed, according to Sagunto City Council.
