Compromís accuses Sagunto mayor of bypassing unions in SAG labour dispute
The Valencianist council group says Mayor Darío Moreno called a staff meeting at the municipal waste company without union representatives and with less than 24 hours' notice.
The labour dispute at SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión — the council-owned company responsible for waste collection and street cleaning in Sagunto) has escalated politically. Compromís (Valencian left-wing bloc) alleges that Mayor Darío Moreno organised a meeting with workers via a weather-alert messaging service, excluding union representatives and giving less than one day's notice. Spokeswoman Maria Josep Picó described the approach as «unethical» and reminiscent of less democratic times. Collective bargaining is a fundamental right under Article 37 of Spain's Constitution, and labour law grants unions recognised rights to information and consultation in such processes. Compromís is also pressing for an urgent meeting of SAG's board of directors — a request the party says has gone unanswered for weeks. The group warns that salary and working conditions have reached a breaking point, with an indefinite strike threatened. The party also questions whether the councillor responsible for SAG should remain in post. According to elperiodicodeaqui.com, the dispute remains unresolved.
