Traffic returns to normal on the A-7 near Sagunto after accident
A traffic accident on the A-7 caused three kilometres of tailbacks toward Alicante near Sagunto this Thursday, before Spain's traffic authority (DGT) confirmed the road had reopened.
The accident was reported shortly after 12:00 on Thursday on the A-7 motorway as it passes through Sagunto, in the direction of Alicante. Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) confirmed the incident and, hours later, declared the road clear again, with traffic back to normal in the area.
The DGT itself posted the alert on its official account on the social network X, warning that the accident was disrupting traffic toward Alicante and causing three kilometres of tailbacks on that stretch of the motorway. Minutes later, the agency updated the information to confirm that traffic was flowing normally again.
While the partial closure lasted, tailbacks of up to three kilometres built up in that direction — on one of the main routes connecting the Camp de Morvedre district with the province of Alicante and the rest of the Mediterranean coast. The DGT has not released further information about the cause of the crash or whether anyone was hurt, nor has it confirmed how many vehicles were involved.
The A-7 is the main road used by people who commute daily between Sagunto and towns to the south, so any closure or tailback on this stretch directly affects travel times for workers, hauliers and visitors passing through the municipality — especially in the middle of August, when holiday traffic heading to the coast adds to the usual flow. Incidents like this are a reminder to check the DGT's official social media channels and website before travelling on this motorway, particularly around midday.
Many workers at the town's industrial plants, such as ArcelorMittal (steel mill) or the future PowerCo battery gigafactory, use this stretch of the A-7 every day to get to work, so disruptions like this one — even when cleared within a few hours — end up affecting the daily commute for a large part of the district.
It has not been confirmed whether one or several vehicles were involved in the accident, or what caused it. No information has been given on whether anyone was injured. Emergency services have made no further statements since the closure was lifted. The affected stretch falls under the DGT, the state road authority, rather than Sagunto City Council, so it is the DGT that would release any further details if they become available.
