Sagunto honours rugby player Lua de Siena Castillo for national titles
Sagunto City Council received young rugby player Lua de Siena Castillo at a formal ceremony recognising two consecutive seasons of success with the Valencian Community selection and the Valquirias Rugby Club.
Lua de Siena Castillo, who plays for local club Estreles de Morvedre Rugby Club, was welcomed at the plenary hall of Sagunto City Council in an institutional tribute attended by Mayor Darío Moreno, Sports Councillor Javier Timón, club director Daniel Quinteros and the player's family.
During the 2024-2025 season, Lua was crowned Spanish M16 champion with the Valencian women's selection in both rugby union (XV) and rugby sevens. Rugby sevens — a format with 7 players per side and two seven-minute halves — has been an Olympic sport since the Rio 2016 Games.
In 2025-2026, she won the Valencian Community M17 league and finished runner-up at the Spanish M17 interclubes championship with Valquirias Rugby Club, a combined team formed in 2017 by players from several Valencian clubs to compete at national level in an all-female category. The Real Federación Española de Rugby (RFER), Spain's national rugby federation founded in 1922 in Barcelona, oversees these competitions. Mayor Moreno praised athletes who take on sports that still face social barriers, according to aytosagunto.es.
