Fertiberia BM Puerto Sagunto promoted to top handball league on 75th anniversary
Sagunto City Council celebrated the local handball club's promotion to Liga ASOBAL (Spain's top professional handball league), secured on 24 May with an 18-17 win over CD Agustinos Alicante.
Fertiberia BM Puerto Sagunto (coastal district) will compete in Spain's handball elite next season after winning the promotion play-offs hosted at the Pabellón Polideportivo de Puerto de Sagunto. The club finished the regular season in second place, beat SCDR Anaitasuna 28-24 in the semi-finals, and then edged CD Agustinos Alicante 18-17 in a tense final. The achievement comes in the club's 75th anniversary year — it was founded in 1951 from the sports section of Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, a historic steelworks, and its arena holds 2,150 spectators.
Mayor Darío Moreno, Sports Councillor Javier Timón, club president Carlos Argente, head coach Sergio Mallo, and captain Diego Olba attended the official reception in the City Hall chamber. The mayor called on residents to set a new membership record and urged regional administrations to provide the financial support needed to consolidate the promotion. Liga ASOBAL, founded in 1990 and officially recognised as a professional league since June 2023, is Spain's third professional sport after football and basketball. According to Sagunto City Council, the club's arena has a capacity of 2,150 spectators.
