Camp de Morvedre marks World Fair Trade Day in a milestone year

The Camp de Morvedre comarca (Valencia region) is joining World Fair Trade Day celebrations in a year when the organised fair trade movement in Spain turns 40.

Camp de Morvedre is marking a milestone in 2026 as Spain's organised fair trade movement celebrates its 40th anniversary of promoting a more equitable commercial model. The comarca has a longstanding local anchor: La Tenda de Tot el Món (Fair Trade shop) in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) has been operating since 1998 — 28 years — and works with Sagunto City Council's Cooperation Department to run awareness activities in the area.

In 2024, certified fair trade products generated nearly €158 million in sales in Spain, with food products accounting for 96% of that total. Behind those figures are producers in developing countries who receive guaranteed minimum prices and social premiums for their communities.

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) was established in 1989, though Spain's national fair trade network dates to 1986. World Fair Trade Day falls on the second Saturday of May. Sagunto City Council's Cooperation Department takes an active role in raising awareness of fair trade principles among local residents. According to elperiodic.com, the comarca is marking the anniversary with local events.
