Sagunto Battery Campus: Generalitat bets on talent training for the new battery hub
The Generalitat (Valencian government) says training and specialising workers is a key piece in consolidating Sagunto's new industrial hub for batteries and electric mobility.
Anyone who wants to train for Sagunto's battery hub currently takes an adapted version of the Higher Vocational Diploma in Laboratory Analysis and Quality Control in València, and Sagunto's own campus will not officially open until the 2027/2028 school year. The Generalitat argues, in a message released on 5 October 2026, that training and specialising people is a key piece in consolidating Sagunto's new industrial hub for batteries and electric mobility. One of the training projects tied to that hub is the Battery Campus, the vocational training centre planned in Parc Sagunt (industrial park), where PowerCo (the Volkswagen Group's battery company) is building its gigafactory.
The land goes back to January 2023. Then-president Ximo Puig announced the purchase of a plot of about 16,000 square metres in Parc Sagunt for 2.3 million euros for the Campus Battery vocational training centre. The same announcement included 200 million euros to develop Parc Sagunt II and 61 million to connect it to the motorway that leads to the port.
The construction budget came more than two years later. In April 2025 the Generalitat proposed awarding the building of the campus to the UTE Vías y Construcciones-CHM Obras e Infraestructuras (a joint venture of construction firms) for 30,850,146.31 euros, VAT included. That joint venture's bid allowed four months to draft the project and twelve to build. The centre will have room for about 400 students and will offer courses in Electricity and Electronics, Installation and Maintenance, and Chemistry.
The contracting process also hit an obstacle. According to Valencia Plaza (a business news outlet) on 18 October 2025, the contract appeals tribunal dismissed the appeal and lifted the suspension of the procedure, which unblocked the campus file.
Training, meanwhile, has already begun outside Sagunto. According to elperiodic.com on 16 July 2026, from the 2026-2027 school year the Vicente Blasco Ibáñez centre in València teaches an adapted version of the Higher Vocational Diploma in Laboratory Analysis and Quality Control, with lithium battery manufacturing content. It was designed with PowerCo, the Instituto Tecnológico de la Energía (energy technology institute) and Quimacova, and was presented as the first step of the future Battery Campus in Sagunto.
Valencia Plaza reported on 30 September 2026 that 42 students have started, or are about to start, training programmes linked to the gigafactory. For its part, actualidadvalencia.com describes the master's as a 60 ECTS (European credits) programme with 11 students, running from October 2026 to July 2027 and fully funded by PowerCo. For anyone living in the Camp de Morvedre district who wants to take the adapted vocational training (FP) course, there is a practical detail: classes are provisionally held at the CIPFP Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (vocational training centre) in València until the Sagunto campus is ready.
That moment is still some way off. The campus will have 19,951.34 square metres of built area, according to Valencia Plaza. The joint venture's bid added up to 16 months between design and construction, and the official opening is planned for the 2027/2028 school year.
