Sagunto holds a minute of silence for three alleged femicides in Spain
Sagunto City Council's Equality Department called a minute of silence on Friday 22 May outside municipal buildings to condemn the alleged femicides in Alicante, Navarra and Girona.
Municipal councillors, city hall staff and local residents gathered outside Sagunto's public buildings to express condemnation of the alleged gender-based killings of three women — aged 55, 44 and 32 — in Alicante, Navarra and Girona respectively.
By the end of the first months of 2026, Spain had already recorded 22 women killed by gender-based violence — on top of the 47 victims counted across the whole of 2025. The national register, running continuously since 2003, has accumulated 1,363 female fatalities; alongside them, 68 minors have lost their lives to the same violence since 2013.
The Equality Department reminds victims that the free 016 helpline is available around the clock, or 112 for emergencies; the municipality also runs a local in-person support service for women. Further information at violenciagenero.igualdad.gob.es.
